Thiruvalluvar University came into existence in the year 2002 and it was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu under the Thiruvalluvar University Act 2002. The main aim of the university is to empower the society through higher education. During its initial stages, the university was offering education only through four of its departments namely economics, zoology, chemistry and physical education.
Now, the university is offering education through several other departments like department of Tamil, English, Medical Physics, Material Science, Bio-technology, Marine Sciences, mathematics, business studies and Ambedkar Studies. Thiruvalluvar University is located in the city of Vellore and the jurisdiction of this university is spread over four districts of Tamil Nadu namely Villlupuram, Thiruvannamalai, Vellore and Cuddalore. The university is offering education through different self-financing, government aided and government colleges spread in the above-mentioned districts. At present, 83 colleges are offering education with affiliation from Thiruvalluvar University.
